– more communities to benefit
THE Health Ministry’s Regional Health Services has embarked on a series of eye care outreaches in communities along the coast, and will extend into the hinterland, with the aim of intensifying reach of the services. This project is in tandem with the ministry’s thrust to improve access to eye care services throughout the country.
The first leg of the series commenced at Buxton, East Coast Demerara, where 40 persons were screened, four of whom were diagnosed with cataract and one with pterygium. Three persons are suspected to have glaucoma, and 20 underwent eye tests and received the necessary treatment. Others patients’ screening results revealed they did not require any specific care.
Persons requiring treatment at the National Ophthalmology Hospital in Port Mourant received referrals for such, and will be taken to the Diamond Diagnostic centre to ensure they are well prepared, physically, for the surgery.
Administrative Assistant Cuba/Guyana Cooperation, Nandkishore Persuad, indicated that the Ministry of Health’s Regional Health Services Unit has, as part of its work programme for 2011, budgeted for these activities, and is pleased to serve the various communities instead of residents approaching health facilities for services.
Similar outreaches will also be conducted at the Enmore Poly Clinic, Region 4; Ithaca, Region 5; Skeldon, Region 6; and several hinterland communities, including Mabaruma, Region 1; Lethem, Region 9; Bartica, Region 7; Wakenaam and Leguan, Region 3; and Suddie, Region 2.
Since its opening, the National Ophthalmology Hospital has been providing eye care services to Guyanese throughout the country, free of cost. (GINA)
