A businessman claims that he has evidence where the City Council is demanding $4.5 million in taxes for a property situated at 36 Robb Street, Georgetown, when, according to him only the sum of $86,000 is owed, which payment, is being withheld by the taxpayer because of the incorrect assessment and discrepancies.
Investigation by someone who claims to be an attorney revealed that this sum is owed, although her assistant examined the property and reported that there is only one property under Assessment No. 77 and 76A. I later visited the attorney’s office, and she told me that she can settle the matter. I refused to accept her suggestion for a settlement. She then threatened me, saying that she has the ‘power’ to sell the property, she held on to my Transport (which is in my son’s name) and refused to return it. I then told her that I would visit the media and let it be known about her threat and proposal. We had a heated argument, but after I threatened her with exposure, she hurriedly went to her office and contacted Kaieteur News, where she reported that I assaulted her, beat up on her etcetera in the presence of police officers and an Assistant Superintendent of Police. I was never arrested. Is this not strange? Would a number of police ranks, inclusive of an ASP, stand silently by while an attorney is assaulted?
An investigation was launched by a senior Superintendent into her allegations.
After a few weeks the authorities came up with absolutely no witnesses for her allegations, and no evidence whatsoever.
The City Council has been collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars and deliberately issuing receipts under a different assessment – #76A, although this error was disclosed as erroneous by the Chief Valuation officer of the Valuation Division of the Government of Guyana since the 1st day of January, 2005, and was repeatedly done, up to recently by the Valuation Department, the powerful City Council conveniently and deliberately ignored the findings of this government office.
I am calling on the Minister of Local Government to investigate the actions and doings of this official in the execution of her job.
As a taxpayer I am also calling on the Minister again to launch an investigation into the dealings, accountability and intromission of all monies collected by the Treasurer’s Office at the Mayor and City Council, including bailout money by Central Government.
I sincerely hope action will be taken
NB: All receipts were being issued under 76A instead of Assessment No. 77, as advised by the Government’s valuation office.
