ONCE again, the Environmental Community Health Organization (ECHO) is appealing to designers, and all those who would be involved in Mash 2011, to spare a thought for the environment. It is the basic unit by which all physical things exist in their present state.
ECHO is calling upon designers to be creative in their work. They should use bio-degradable materials to make their costumes and floats to showcase various segments of our economy.
These celebrations are really part of our Guyanese culture. But climate change is changing many aspects of our culture and our general way of life. Therefore, all Guyanese need to take a more sensible approach to the way we do things in our local communities and celebrate different occasions in our society.
One area that must immediately attract our attention is the kind of waste we generate and our general management of it.
Plastic and styrofoam appear to be the most noticeable materials among solid waste generated in our communities.
The excessive use of plastic and other non-biodegradable materials hurt our natural environment and threatens the continuation of many aspects of our culture including Mash and other celebrations.
Therefore, ECHO is calling on all to assist, by ensuring that they play their part in keeping their surrounding clean and healthy and reducing the use of plastic and other materials that hurt the environment.
Considering the global environmental situation, ECHO believes that the environment should be given top priority in this year’s celebrations.
