UG student remanded on gun robbery, other charges

TWENTY-THREE-YEAR-OLD University of Guyana student Kurt Kendall was yesterday remanded to prison on charges of robbery under arms and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. He appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Particulars of the offences said:
* on February 7, being armed with a gun, he robbed Mathura Narine of a
haversack amongst booty valued a total of $18,500 and
* the same day, he had a .38 revolver with two live matching rounds while
not being holder of licences for them.
Defence counsel Joseph Harmon, in a failed bail application for the defendant, said Kendall was granted a government scholarship to study medicine in Cuba but, because of the student’s mental condition, he had to return to Guyana.
The lawyer said the undergraduate was treated and is, currently, pursuing  the degree in medicine at UG.
However, the magistrate held that no special reasons, as required, were advanced for the grant.
Kendall (no address given) has to be back in court on February 15.
