– remanded to prison
A 45 year-old father of Parika, East Bank Essequibo, was yesterday remanded to prison by Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin when he appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court on charges of carnal knowledge and buggery, which he allegedly committed on his daughter and son. The father of two was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that between December 2010 and January 2011, he was involved in sexual activities with his nine-year-old son and his eleven-year-old daughter.
According to facts in the case, the accused is said to be an alcoholic, who would go out and return home late at nights.
The facts further stated that the accused came home under the influence of alcohol and found his daughter asleep when he allegedly committed the act.
Also, on a separate occasion, the father allegedly committed the act of buggery on his son.
Police Sergeant Sherwin Matthews, prosecuting, objected to bail on the grounds that the accused is from another district and he may not return for trial. He also added that the accused may want to tamper with the witnesses.
The accused was remanded to prison and will make his next court appearance on February 28, for statements to be served.
A police source close to the investigation related that the victims were afraid of their father and did not disclose the incident until January 21, when they confessed to an aunt.
The aunt subsequently took the children to the Parika Police Station where a report was made at around 16:00 hrs on the said date.
The accused was arrested after police went to his address.
