Who will we vote for in 2011 elections?

I AM writing this article to inform all politicians who are taking part in the 2011 elections that are coming soon that myself, along with a majority of others who have qualifications, experience and exposure to Guyana’s circumstances and who migrated to Guyana or are re-migrants to Guyana, want to see positive changes occur – may it be with this current ruling party or another. Some of the great vibrant changes that we want made to achieve our goals are:
1. Creating employment for the nation. Currently, University of Guyana students and also UG graduates don’t have much to look forward to when finished with tertiary education. We need jobs, hope, and survival for the future. We need to look into our people’s interests. We need to stop sending people away and give them a real good reason to stay here.
Answer: Creation of good jobs. We need job creation for everyone, even labourers. Remember, labourers are just as important as careerists because if we don’t have labourers to do laborious jobs like take care of farm animals to butchery, go fishing to provide food for the market, drivers to drive public transportation for us, etc. we wouldn’t be anywhere in life. So labouring jobs as well as professional jobs should be provided for the entire country to sustain population, economic growth and other sectors.
2. We need improved sea defences throughout Guyana. In order to keep Guyana alive and booming we need to save the country from future flooding which most likely will occur. The No. 63 Beach definitely needs to be saved because it is the number one tourist destination beach in Guyana. Saving the beach will also allow Berbice (or Berbicians) to survive. Berbice is known as the best county that breeds all agricultural produce for our domestic and foreign markets. The tides are getting heavier and harsher everyday and we need to save our homes, lives, plantations, and the economy from the ferocious tides that are encroaching, day by day,on the public road. This is the most essential reason why I am stressing on this vital ongoing issue that needs to be addressed soon.
3. Interest- free loans or soft loans. We need a government that will focus on the private sector. No one so far has ever really paid attention to the private sector by giving soft loans or interest- free loans to business people who have  good credential backgrounds, who you know will repay the loans and will do so by re-building the economy with businesses, employment and finance towards the economy.
All of this will be a large boost towards the nation overall. The private sector now will be able to develop the country in various sectors to help the nation grow and the economy will inflate with the country getting wealthier and our dollar stronger. Obama used this strategy of interest- free and soft loans and even cutting down taxes for business people to see them improve America and it worked out beautifully.
4. Get the animals off the roadside to prevent accidents and deaths. We need someone with a new vision. Savannah lands are vast and  natural landscapes are provided for the benefit of these animals so they could feed and roam in those large areas. These animals are not supposed to disturb rice farmers, residential areas, roadsides, public places or not even the popular No. 63 tourist beach in Berbice. We should not allow cattle to damage and destroy gardeners’ vegetables and fruits, breaking people’s private property fences, annoying resort owners (overseas development) premises, and most of all they should have never been there in the first place because they are the culprits that are causing massive erosion by trampling the sand banks (that hardly exist anymore) everyday so don’t be surprised when a high tidal wave hits your area, I warned everyone about the effects on numerous occasions. I believe this issue needs a document to back it.
5. Underground sewerage and rehabilitating important streets. This is a new method of keeping the country clean that should be introduced to Guyana. This has been used overseas already for years and has shown splendid improvement. Keeping surroundings clean from flies, the stench from latrines, trenches and stopping litter from blocking the flow of water through these small trenches. We need a new, modernized mechanism to be enforced to serve as an underground sewerage by concreting all trenches but keeping small square steel boxes barred off for the rain to pass through and make the water run freely and for plumbers to go underground in the instance that something should go wrong. The rehabilitation of streets throughout the country should occur. Once you pay your property taxes and are taking care of your land the street in front, near, beside, etc. should be made for your benefit as well as others. The mid-point access road towards the beach still hasn’t been made even though I have complained numerous times through media, speech or writing.  I do hope the lucky person next in line to lead our country will look into vital issues like this one. The last point here I would like to make is that everyone is special not only the educated and wealthy and so, everyone’s street is important too, so all streets should be made to enhance the country. Foreigners will find this very attractive.
6. Electricity, water and phone bills need to be reduced and worked out well towards the citizens. Electricity bills are hefty towards business people especially and are not provided on a 24-hour basis. We should look more into using natural resources as energy and accessing them to homes and businesses at a cheaper rate; that is the solar energy. This should be made easy especially since Guyana is a tropical climate country with bright sun. The water system should also be accessible towards business people and they should not have to dig their own pipeline path and be overtaxed. Water is a main resource that should be conserved but made available for all. The price of cellular phone usage should be reduced for people like me who live in the interior and when communicating, people should not ask if you have a GT&T cellular or a Digicel because of the hot costs.
7. Reduction of VAT. VAT needs to be reduced in this developing country that is not so developed like Canada that offers 15% VAT and America at 6%. I want to know how Guyana came to a striking 16%, a place where there is low employment and living standards and people have to struggle to buy only a few items now for $1,000. VAT shouldn’t be charged on food items because the supermarkets in Berbice do, and America doesn’t provide food stamps to their customers by feeding the nation and getting productivity back from the citizens through their employment in factories.
8. Reduce speeding, enforce dim light usage and bring back large buses. Speeding is the villain for causing so many road accidents and deaths. I do believe we should have signs everywhere on the road placed with speed limits e.g.40km/h, 60km/h etc. Always drive slowly where there is a lot of traffic and also where there are schools. When travelling or waiting for a vehicle on the road many people use bright lights to blind you. Overseas, there is a bright light limit where drivers are  permitted to use only dim lights, so as to avoid accidents and avoid blinding others.
9. Improvement in hospitals and health care countrywide. We are so much aware of the lack of responsibility that we are not getting quality and qualified doctors who are kind and caring to deal with us. We need more improved facilities and better prescribed medication to use when we are ill.
10. Better education and facilities for nursery, primary and secondary schools. Schools in Guyana do not provide much good learning materials and exposure to the outside world. Abroad, children are exposed to field trips where they do not just read about these things but actually go and see them for themselves. Kids don’t just want to read books, which become boring. But they actually want to go for an adventure and experience fun with friends together on a school bus.
11. Old age pensioners’ homes, help and shelter for homeless or unfortunates. There are a lot of old people, single women and homeless who are unfortunate and have nowhere to go, so we need to provide a shelter for them instead of having them beg and sleep on the streets.
12. Start a “No Littering” campaign and educate people about the side effects of littering. Littering is a detrimental and hazardous situation in Guyana that needs to be focused on more seriously. Do you believe foreigners would want to come back to Guyana if they see the surroundings are like a pig pen? Start educating the children first then they will go home and tell their parents what they have learnt about throwing litter in public places. Dirty surroundings are an eyesore, cause unbearable stenches (because of disposal of solid waste in public places) and it is just not right worldwide.
13. Stop exploiting women and engaging in public sex. Women need to be respected and men should stop exploiting them by using them as strippers in public places and having them engaged in (public) sex in vehicles on the beach where children run around and wander. They could see such acts that they are not supposed to be exposed to at such young ages.
14. Need stricter authority, rules and laws must be enforced, more policing. We need a strict enforcement of laws so people will feel secure; they know who to go to when there is a problem and are sure they will get a good outcome of the situation. Police, especially in Berbice, need to do more than collect bribes and start tackling issues and shine out as good officers. We need to abide by the rules, laws and regulations and they should be displayed almost everywhere we go. Also, we need more street policing on bicycles to curb common crime in small societies.
15. Unity: everyone should be involved and allowed to participate in governmental activities. We also need more government agencies around the county to ensure work is being done. I noticed when things are done, the public is not being notified or maybe only some.
We also need unity with all races. Work as one to build Guyana, not destroy, have equality. These are the important things we are looking forward to, to make a great change in Guyana that will create livelihoods and a great atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. Many overseas-based Guyanese would love to venture out back here in Guyana once there is a crystal clear vision ahead. I would adore seeing our new mastermind create all these developments and even more left out with his yearly budget, patriotism, intellect and effort for the people and for Guyana.
