Operations of family court delayed

-Cabinet dismayed at sloth of rules committee
DURING his post-Cabinet press briefing at the Office of the President, Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon stated that,The government has expressed disappointment over the sloth of the Rules Committee that has resulted in the delayed commissioning of the Family Court.
“Cabinet was therefore critical of the delays at the level of the Rules Committee of the High Court in completing its review of the Family Court rules,” according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon.
Luncheon said those rules have been made available since 2010 and the Rules Committee adoption is necessary for the definitive Parliamentary intervention that was needed for the court to be established.

Dr. Luncheon told reporters that while there are circumstances that the executive can use as an authoritative reason for bringing the court into function, the preferable course is for the judiciary and rules committee to run its course, where this action is concerned.

The country’s first Family Court will handle issues such as divorce, division of property, domestic matters, adoption, guardianship and custody.

In early 2009, Cabinet granted a two-fold approval to establish the court and erect a structure in which the entity would be housed.
The new, two-storey building, has replicated the architectural style of the Supreme Court. It has an adjoining mediation centre and library.
