Shamaz told jury – “I saw them beat my husband”
SHAMAZ Mohamed, the woman who claimed that she fainted after witnessing father Ramnaraine, called ‘Tiger’, and son Suresh Mohabir,
called ‘Dickey’, beat her husband Saheed Mohamed, called ‘Zico’, until he was unconscious, denied a defence counsel suggestion that
she was a liar. Shamaz, the star witness for the prosecution, testified that after receiving information from a small girl on August 6, 2006,
she ran as fast as she could to see her husband receiving two lashes with a piece of wood before she fainted.
When she recovered, she noticed that her husband was lying unconscious. And she had to feel for his heart-beat to determine
whether he was alive or dead.
Under cross-examination, Senior Counsel Mr. Bernard De Santos, suggested to the witness that she was a liar and that he would
refer to evidence in order to show that she was not speaking the truth.
When shown copies of her evidence before the magistrate at the preliminary inquiry, and her statement to the police, the witness
admitted that her evidence to the jury contained things which she had not told the police nor the magistrate.
Mr. De Santos suggested to the witness that the reason why she did not say those things to the police or the magistrate was
because those things which were said to the jury by her never happened.
In her opening address to the jury yesterday, State Prosecutor Ms. Judith Gildharie-Mursalin, who is in association with lawyer
Miss Konyo Sandiford, said that the facts will reveal that the accused intended to kill or cause grievous bodily harm.
Shamaz Mohamed, the first witness to be called, said that she and her husband lived at 24 Block CC Mon Repos.
According to her, Mohamed is her reputed husband and her children’s father. They lived together for 10 years. He is now dead.
Witness said that she knew Suresh Mohabir. She also knows Ramnarine Mohabir, the father of Suresh.
She recalled that on July 10, 2006, about 5:30hrs she was at home when a little girl told her something.
Consequent to what the girl said, Shamaz said that she ran to the corner in time to see ‘Tiger’ holding her husband who was
lying on the ground, face downward, and ‘Dickey’ lashing him with a piece of wood.
Witness said that they later took the injured Mohamed to the B.V. Police Station and later the Georgetown Hospital.
In further cross-examination, witness said that while the men were attacking her husband, she heard one of them say, “kill him
“, but she could not tell which of the men had spoken.
The hearing continues today.
‘Tiger’ and ‘Dickey’ not brothers, but father and son
