Ahmad returned as ECB  president
TREASURER of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Sheik Ahmad yesterday defeated former president Alvin Johnson for the second successive time, to claim the stewardship of the Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) when that organization held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and election of office bearers at their Anna Regina cricket hostel.
Having defeated Johnson back in 2009 for the position of presidency, Ahmad returned to gain an 11-5 victory over the former GCB vice president and immediately threw his support, all 100% of it, behind GCB presidential candidate Ramsay Ali. Ahmad will have five new faces on his executive, with Budesh Chatterpaul, Veren Chintamani, Ms. Verna D’ Aguair, Nazir Mohammed and Anthony Murray replacing Otto (Brian) Christiani, Marvin Pearson, Hakim Khan, Carl Brandon and Sheik Fazal in their respective positions.
In an invited comment with Chronicle Sport, Ahmad expressed his pleasure at the electorates’ confidence in him serving as president once again and vowed to improve the game of cricket in the Cinderella County.
“When I won this presidency two years ago, I made some remarks with regards to taking Essequibo’s cricket to higher heights. Unfortunately for various reasons, all was not accomplished and this time around, my aim is to improve in all areas, the game of cricket.
I would like to charge my executives to let us work together in achieving the goal of making cricket in Essequibo a vibrant sport, especially in the longer version of the game.
All area associations’ executives need to put up their hand and be counted in this drive, as I believe ‘Together we aspire, together we will achieve’, a motto I will have in mind when it comes to cricket in Essequibo,” stated Ahmad.
There were several discrepancies within the ECB during the last year, including one area board executive owing the County board numerous monies from products entrusted into his care during the Guyana Beverage Company’s Busta Championship tournament.
The full executive body of the ECB which will serve until 2013 reads: Sheik Ahmad (president), Faizal Bacchus (v/president), Otto (Brian) Christiani (Secretary), Budesh Chatterpaul (Treasurer), Veren Chintamani (Asst. Secretary), Marvin Pierson (Asst. Treasurer), Nazir Mohammed (PRO), Verna D’ Aguair (Chairperson Competitions Committee) and Anthony Murray (Marketing Manager).
The returning officer was present secretary of the GCB Anand Sanasie.
