THE Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) said it was unable to make pension payments as well as conduct normal operations at its office in Mahaica on Monday due to a break and entry there.
A release from GPOC said the police were called in and have launched an investigation into the matter.
While no transactions involving the public were facilitated at this location on Monday, normal operations resumed at the Mahaica Post Office yesterday.
The corporation expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and wishes to further assure the public that it remains committed to providing its usual services in an environment that is comfortable to both the public and its staff.
According to a Police report, at about 06:50 hrs Monday, employees of the Mahaica Post office, which had been closed since 16:00 hrs on December 31, 2010, found on reporting for work that the building had been broken and entered. “The safe had been torched and $586,750.00 taken away,” the Police said in a statement.
Police said their investigations have revealed that entry into the building was gained through the flooring.
