IT appears as if GT&T believes it has a God-given right to maintain monopolistic control of the telecommunications sector, and is prepared to vehemently attack anyone who dares to interfere with this arrangement. The government is apparently in the process of formulating new legislation to govern the sector and GT&T, it appears, is of the opinion that this new legislation will reduce their market share and invite competition. Well this may come as a surprise to GT&T, but Guyana has an open market economy where investment is welcomed and price is determined by market forces. Consumers decide what they want and the law of demand and supply helps to shape price. Clearly, consumers want telephone service at a more affordable price. This has seen the emergence of new operators offering VOIP services that enables cheap international dialling. This disturbs GT&T immensely since it interferes with their annual windfall from overcharging customers.
Well that’s very sad for GT&T. Instead of licking their wounds and the CEO making a spectacle of himself the monopoly giant should be formulating plans that would result in a reduction in the cost for international calling. This is what customers want.
