Speeding blamed for smash-up on Vlissengen Road

SPEEDING is being blamed for a two-vehicle smash-up yesterday afternoon at Vlissengen Road and Eping Avenue, Georgetown, in which several persons luckily escaped with minor injuries. One of the injured, Eon Marks – the driver of motorcar, PDD 6117, told the Guyana Chronicle that he and a passenger, who was in the front seat, were on their way home on Vlissengen Road when they saw a speeding pickup overtaking a motorcycle from Irving Street into Vlissengen Road and there was nothing he could do to avoid a collision.

Marks said the car slammed head on into the pickup which was hurled into the air and landed on its side while the car crashed into a concrete bridge at the head of Eping Avenue.

Eyewitnesses said they heard a loud impact and when they looked around, they saw the pickup vehicle literally “in the air” and they screamed.

By then, a sizable crowd of onlookers had gathered and assisted the occupants out of both vehicles which were badly damaged.

Both drivers and the occupants had visible injuries about the body which included cuts, bruises and lacerations.

The pickup driver was too shaken to recount what happened. Police arrived on the scene shortly afterwards.
