THE president, the general-secretary, the assistant treasurer and one member deputising for the P.R.O. of the Justices of the Peace and Commissioners of Oaths to Affidavits Association of Guyana Travelled to Cotton field on the Essequibo Coast, to hold a seminar with the Essequibo chapter of the said Association on November 27, 2010.
In spite of the heavy rain on that day the attendance at the seminar was reasonably good with 12 Essequibians in attendance. It was held at the Cotton Field Primary School.
The president in his contribution spoke about the duties of the Justices of the Peace (JP) and also stated that JPs cannot perform the duties of the Commissioners of Oaths to Affidavits. He then went on to explain the relevant laws governing a Justice of the Peace and Commissioner of Oaths to Affidavits.
The general-secretary advised the participants on the correct way of preparing minor clerical affidavits that has to do with a wrong spelling or related mistake on a Birth Certificate, and also advised on the preparation of Passport Forms and Marriage License Petitions.
The assistant treasurer spoke about membership and advised that a chapter of this national association is not a separate organization, but just a branch of the main body and as such has to be guided by the constitution and when a person applies for membership that person is applying to be a member of the national body firstly, then afterwards will become part of the chapter of his/ her district.
The fourth person on the visit informed the Essequibians that the president of Guyana gets dozens of applications from persons wanting to be Justices of the Peace and/ or Commissioners of Oaths to Affidavits daily and those appointed are those he, the president, considers of good character and as such the Justices of the Peace and Commissioners of Oaths to Affidavits are seen as leaders of the Community and must display that leadership quality and also get to understand the laws of consumer protection so as to be able to advise people in their community as to their rights and duties as consumers.
The seminar started at 9:30 hrs and closed at 14:45 hrs.
Visits to Berbice and Linden will follow soon.
