Topp XX takes lead in tournament

UDFA 2010/2011 Open League
UNBEATEN Bakewell Topp XX edged past Vasco 1-0 last Thursday to maintain their lead in the Upper Demerara Football Association’s (UDFA) Open league championship currently being played on grounds other than the traditional Mackenzie Sports Club venue.
In other matches played on the same day, Net Rockers outscored Blue berry Hill 3-1, while on Saturday, Amelia’s Ward shocked Net Rockers with a 3-1 victory, Winners Connection crushed Net Rockers 4-2, while the Topp XX and Winners Connection encounter ended in the 50th minute with Topp XX leading 1-0 while a decision is to be made by the UDFA concerning the premature end of that match.
The matches in this round robin league involving some ten clubs and which is being used to determine the First Division teams in the Upper Demerara area.
At this break in the championship Topp XX have 13 points after playing five matches for which they have four wins and one draw with a goal difference of 8, with second position being occupied by Net Rockers who are on 12 points from six completed matches.
First division champions Milerock who along with Silver Shattas each have seven points, having both completed four games with two wins and one draw and one loss, with a goal difference of zero.
Winners Connection and Blueberry Hill United follow on five points with Winners Connection having played four matches with one win, two draws and one loss, compared to Blueberry Hill’s five matches played, one win, two draws and two losses.
But Winners Connection have a goal difference of 1 as against a minus 2 for Blueberry Hill.
They are followed by Vasco and Peacemakers of Ituni with four points each after playing four games. They have one win, one draw and two losses while also sharing a minus 1 goal difference.
Amelia’s Ward United are next with three points from two matches played with one win and one loss while having a zero goal difference and at the bottom of the table lies Eagles United who has one point from five matches played with four defeats and one draw.
The Open League championship was officially opened on Sunday 7th November, 2010 with a Day of Sports & Food Sale at the Bayroc Community Center Ground. This event exhibited the talents of the footballers in Region Ten (10) through activities such as athletics, dribbling, tackling, obstacle course, beach soccer etc.  Funds from the Food Sale were geared towards the development of each Club.  The Day of Sports & Food Sale was sponsored by Ansa Mcal Ltd.
The League is being played on the outskirt grounds of Linden namely Bayrock Community Center, Christianburg Community Center and Linden Foundation Secondary School grounds respectively. 
This being done in an effort to build back the support base and situations of Clubs and to highlight the usefulness of the community grounds.
At the Opening Ceremony Mr. Horace James stated that he is pleased and will continue to stand committed towards the development of the grounds and football in the Linden community.  Vice President of the UDFA – Mr. Sharma Solomon urged all Clubs to stay committed to the development of the game.
The main sponsors of the League are Guyana Geology & Mines Commission (GGMC), Mr. Wayne Ebba, Mr. Mark Grimmond, Mr. Shawn Hopkinson, Mr. Bonnie Davis, Mr. Horace James (Linmine Secretariat), Mr. Andrew McBean (NCN Linden) and Mr. Gordon Gumbs (Linden Hospital Complex).
The winner of the competition is set to pocket $200,000, while the other two top teams will pocket $100,000 and $50,000 respectively, with individual prizes being awarded to the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and the player who scores the most goals in the league which continues on the 8th January, 2011 due to the 21st Kashif and Shanghai Football tournament.
