President’s College wins GGMC Secondary Schools’ Science, Technology Quiz 2010

Ahead of runner-up QC…
GUYANA Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) has announced that President’s College (PC) won its second Secondary Schools Science and Technology Quiz, ahead of runner-up Queen’s College (QC).
A release said in the expanded format, from eight schools in 2009 to 16 in 2010, competitors from nine of the 10 administrative regions were invited to field teams this year.
Those which participated also were Abrams Zuil Secondary, Anna Regina Multilateral, Berbice High, Bishops’ High, Mackenzie High, Mahaicony Secondary, Mahdia Secondary, New Amsterdam Multilateral, North West Secondary, St. Joseph High, St. Stanislaus College, Three Miles Secondary, Bartica and West Demerara Secondary.

The four which competed in the semi-finals were Berbice High against PC and Abrams Zuil versus QC.

The release said an awards ceremony was held at the Guyana International Conference Centre at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, on Tuesday, at which scholarships and trophies were awarded to the PC team, by GGMC Chairman, Mr. Ronald Webster and Acting GGMC Commissioner, Mr.William Woolford.

QC received trophies and all participants received book vouchers.

The students with the most accumulated points were Kevin Garbaran and Randol Schwiers from PC, who amassed 30 points each.

The quiz, conceptualised by Woolford, has the objectives of encouraging and engaging students, who are pursuing studies in the Science and Technology fields at the secondary level, to develop a more in-depth approach to research and studies also in Mathematics, Mining and the Geosciences.
It is also intended to create a greater awareness and provide strategic information to students who are interested in pursuing careers in Science, Mathematics, Mining and Geosciences.
The release said GGMC is a development change agent in the diversification of this country’s  economic base and, through its activities in the mining, mineral and petroleum sectors, plays a pivotal role in educating its various stakeholders and the general public on the local mining, minerals and petroleum sectors.
In addition, GGMC, pursuant to its role in promoting awareness, education and Science, Technology, Mining and the Geosciences, has initiated the quiz series for Science and Technology students at the fifth form level.
GGMC recorded its appreciation of the Ministry of Education, National Centre for Educational Research Development (NCERD) and National Communications Network (NCN), for their kind cooperation and expressed gratitude to Quiz Master, Mr. Ron Robinson and Chief Judge, Mr. Brian Sucre, for their continued support.
All of the programmes, which include eight preliminaries, four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and the finals, were recorded for television and radio and are being shown at 19:00 hrs each week night on NCN Channel 11 television.
