Accused constant abuser remanded on wounding charge
ANOTHER defendant in a domestic violence case was yesterday remanded to prison by Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Ganesh Niles (no address given) pleaded not guilty to the charge, which said, last December 2, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Poreia Mannie so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant ended a relationship with Niles because of constant abuse but, on that day, she was at Stabroek Market in Georgetown when he approached her for reconciliation.
The Prosecutor said, after the woman rebuffed the appeal, the defendant took a knife from his pocket and slashed her on one hand.
Telford, successfully, objected to bail for Niles and informed that the latter has a similar case pending in a different Court.
Attorney-at-law Mr. James Bond, for the Defence, in his failed application, claimed Niles and Mannie are still living together and have a two-year old child.
The lawyer added that the couple recently bought a motor vehicle, which Mannie wants registered in her name and that is why she has made the allegation.
But the woman denied making a false accusation and maintained that she is constantly abused by the prisoner, who will remain on remand until December 10.
