Confidence trickster robs Berbice vendor in Essequibo

A VENDOR from Berbice was robbed in Essequibo, last Saturday afternoon, by a young man who posed as a good samaritan.
The victim was walking and selling his merchandise when he met the stranger on Dartmouth Public Road where the latter pretended to be interested in making a purchase.

He convinced the seller that it was too late for him to walk on the road with all the things he had, including money and offered him lodging at his parents’ home.
On his taking up the offer, the alleged benefactor secured the salesman’s luggage, which included cash and a piece of gold jewellery and took him to another part of the village, where he left him, on the pretext of going to hire a car to convey them to Charity, also on the Essequibo Coast.
However, after the Berbician waited for half an hour, he retraced his steps to where the goods were deposited, only to be told that his companion had gone with them in a motor vehicle.
The vendor screamed when he realised he had been tricked and made a report to the Police, who are investigating the confidence trick.
Public-spirited citizens gave the man from the ‘Ancient County’ money to travel back to Berbice.
