DOMESTIC violence has risen to the fore of everyday existence in Guyana in a manner that seems to indicate that it is just another one of those socially acceptable traits that typify the prevailing normative framework. It is an open secret that violence against women and children in Guyana is a socialised trait and that official response especially as it relates to the police has been more of a hands off attitude than anything else. Nor has the traditional role of social entities such as the churches, mandirs, and mosques been much different as women and children are forced, through learned helplessness to accept the status quo.
Given the preponderance of violence against women and children over the last two years or so, it is indeed commendable that efforts are underway to organize an anti-domestic violence rally on November 25 at the GCC Ground. This initiative is led by US based Guyanese mental health professional and charitable worker, Dianne Madray, and is supported by Red Thread and other entities and individuals, including Stella Ramsaroop.
I am taking this opportunity to urge support for this rally. Please turn out in thousands to say a resounding NO to domestic violence and catalyze a campaign that can become forceful in redressing this disturbing practice.
I am especially urging religious organisations to contact Ms. Madray and pledge support to ensure that this effort makes an impact and starts off a process of educating and arming all and sundry to eliminate domestic violence.
