…at second Caribbean Fury event
President Bharrat Jagdeo believes that the initiative to host boxing matches monthly will provide the exposure needed by Guyana’s local amateur boxers to develop into professional fighters. This he stated in an invited comment to the National Communications Network (NCN) Channel 11 on Saturday evening at the second Caribbean Fury event in which a number of top Guyanese boxers participated at the Princess Hotel, Providence.
The President said that such events will provide Guyana with increased publicity internationally, and more importantly, would expose local fighters to what is required for them to perform well internationally.
He is also pleased about the fights that are being held monthly as this would lead to more amateur fighters moving on to the professional level.
“We want to make sure that as many sportsmen come here to participate in locally organized fights as in this case …I am happy that it came off, as it provides good publicity for Guyana abroad and it is very important for our local fighters,” President Jagdeo stated.
The President is also of the view that the state-owned NCN should begin buying rights to some of the fights so that the promoters would have a greater chance of arranging more events and gain additional incentives.
With regard to other sports, President Jagdeo stated that with the completion of the Olympic-sized swimming pool at Liliendaal, on the East Coast of Demerara, and the beginning of the athletic track at Leonora, on the West Coast, it is Government’s hope that sports will blossom.
One of the highlights of the event was the victory won by Guyana’s first female boxing champion Gwendolyn O’Neil who won the female heavyweight championship title against Pauline London. (GINA)
