DEXTER Marshall, no address given, was yesterday charged with the murder of Mark Caesar, called ‘Lil Mark’, on October 1 last.
Marshall is the brother of Steve Jupiter who was gunned down in a similar circumstance on September 4, 2010, in Cummings Lodge.
Police believe that Caesar’s killing was in retaliation for the killing of Jupiter, his common-law wife, son and two other men.
Defence Counsel Mr. Vic Puran represented the accused, and informed the court that before his client was placed on an identification parade, a police officer took his client’s photo and circulated it to the witnesses.
Puran said the officer took his client’s image on a cellular phone and gave to the witnesses.
Puran said his client is willing to pick out the police officer who took his photo with a cell phone and then circulated it to witnesses in the matter.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said the police did not conduct an identification parade. He said the accused was seen by an eyewitness in a car, which sped away after the shooting.
In response, Puran said he is alarmed that the police can now change their story. He said his client signed a form to go on the identification parade. He argued that the police are now trying to deny putting his client on an identification parade and now placed a witness in the scene who, they claim, saw when his client committed the crime.
“This is a master stroke by the police, now denying that the identification parade was never conducted” said Puran.
Marshall was remanded to prison and will return to court on October 29 for statements to be served.
At around 19:00hrs on October 1, Mark Caesar, who was standing alone at the corner of Broad and Adelaide Streets, his usual liming spot, was shot at multiple times. Residents recalled hearing at least 15 gunshots.
The badly-wounded Caesar was left lying on the corner and his attackers escaped along Adelaide Street. Caesar reportedly sustained gunshot wounds to the head, hand, legs and other parts of the body.
He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital and died while receiving treatment.
