‘MONSTER’ pleads guilty to killing wife, Guyana Chronicle dated Oct.12-2010.
Fisherman Chaetram Singh called ‘Monster’, yesterday afternoon, during his trial at the Demerara Assizes, pleaded guilty to killing his wife, Ileen Lall, on February 6, 2007.
His lawyer however, Mr. Huckumchand, told the court yesterday afternoon that his client would like to change his ‘not guilty’ plea to that of ‘guilty’ to the lesser count of manslaughter.
This killer, as most other killers, will make a mockery of the law and others will do same.
Kill, then go to court, plead not guilty then change their plea to guilty of lesser charge of manslaughter.
Why do killers do this? They test the law first to see how it’s going for them. There is a possibility they might get off on some sort of technicality.
Only when that does not work they will plea to a lesser count in order to receive just eight years in prison.
You take a life then make mockery of the law and when push comes to shove you know you will only receive eight years in prison. This is one of the main reasons killings will continue unabated in Guyana.
Mostly women will continue to suffer at the hands of men because men are protected by the law.
I could fully understand if one kills in self defence but not killings such as these.
This killer should be sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison with no chance of ever getting out until death. The law is screwed.
Imagine police issuing wanted bulletins for wanted criminals. The wanted men are showing up with their lawyers only to be let go at the end of the day. Some of these wanted men are now contemplating suing police.
Do the police not have facts and proof of criminality before issuing wanted bulletins so as to charge these wanted men immediately?
Many killers make mockery of the law
