Minister Manickchand assures Sheema’s family of support

The call for justice for 21-year-old Sheema Mangar, who was brutally dragged under a car and killed, continues; and her mother, Radica Thakoor, said Human Services and Social Security Minister Priya Manickchand gave the family assurance of her support.
Thakoor met with Manickchand yesterday and she noted that among the concerns she raised with the Minister was the fact that the fabric testing has been delayed.
Police investigators were supposed to be checking to see if pieces of fabric found beneath a car connected to the case and currently impounded, match the clothing the Demerara Bank employee was wearing when she was killed on Camp Street.
However, the sample has not even left the country.
“I am patient and fighting for justice for my daughter, but it is time enough. It is a month now and nothing coming from the police…my daughter did not deserve her death, and we want justice for her,” Sheema’s mother said.
Meanwhile, in an invited comment, Manickchand reaffirmed that she will use her office to assist in whatever way she can.
Mangar was making her way home and was at North Road waiting for a bus when her blackberry phone was snatched. The 21-year-old gave chase as the robber entered a waiting car.
Eyewitness reports say that she placed herself in front of the vehicle in an effort to stop the thief, but was run over and dragged several feet, from North Road to Church Street, as the car sped away.
Public spirited citizens rushed her to the Georgetown Public Hospital and later she was transferred to the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital where she died the following day.
