TRANSPORT Sports Club (TSC) off- spinning all- rounder Shafeik Ishmael was on Sunday named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the just concluded Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) organized Haier Cup sponsored second division limited overs tournament.
According to the GCA’s statistician, Ishmael scored over 400 runs and took over 20 wickets and 10 catches to cart off a 21 inch Haier television set, along with a 14 inch Haier television set which was the prize for his most wickets in the tournament, as the sponsors distributed out over G$1m in prizes.
Ishmael, his teammate and skipper Shawn Massiah, Guyana Defence Force’s Colin Mc Pherson, Guyana National Industrial Corporation’s (GNIC) Elton Baker, Third Class’ Alvin Castello and Demerara Cricket Club’s (DCC) Jermaine Horatio all received a Haier DVD player after being adjudged the player of the respective rounds of the tournament.
Horatio and Baker won theirs for their man of the match performances the previous day, wherein Horatio took 5-22 against Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) and Baker struck an unbeaten 80 against Everest Cricket Club.
MSC’s Danny Narayan received a 21 inch Haier television after being adjudged the player of the first round of the tournament while Castello who took 3-16 and made an unbeaten 97 against DCC in their final preliminary round match, was named the player of the second round and he too received a 21 inch Haier television set.
Everest’s wicketkeeper Dennis Mangal was named the best fielder while DCC’s Jamal Hinckson, who was forced to watch his team go down to GNIC by 66 runs in the final, was named the best batsman after aggregating over 400 runs with two centuries. They both received one Haier DVD player.
GNIC received the Haier Cup and a cheque for an undisclosed sum and 15 medallions for their victory, while DCC received the runners up trophy, cheque and 15 medallions at the prize giving ceremony that followed the final.
