GRDB hosts ‘Open Day’ today for rice farmers at Lesbeholden

AS part of a series of activities currently being conducted during Agriculture Month, the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) will today host an ‘Open Day’  at the Lesbeholden Research Station in Black Bush Polder for rice farmers throughout Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne).
Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud is slated to deliver remarks at the event, as well as formally  commission ‘a paddy drying floor’.
The minister will also inspect the operations of a paddy dryer and cleaner which were recently rehabilitated.
Also at today’s Open Day, the GRDB will be offering stakeholders a deeper insight into its work and one of these areas is the Advanced Yield Trail (AYT).
There are 22 new rice lines under the AYT, which is looking at them since they may eventually be released as new commercial varieties.
The GRDB also compares traditional varieties, looks at seed rates and fertilizer regimens best suited for a comprehensive management practice and agronomic practice, among other areas of support.
Agriculture Month is being held under the theme ‘Fighting Global Hunger through Agriculture Diversification’.
