Mother of six on narcotics charge granted $450,000 bail

ACTING Chief Justice Mr. Ian Chang, S.C., has granted bail in the sum of $450,0000 to Kamaladai Deonarine  who is facing two charges for possession of cannabis and cocaine respectively for trafficking.
The mother of six was earlier refused bail by West Coast Demerara Magistrate Miss Ann Mc Lennon, and had been remanded to the  Berbice Prisons, New Amsterdam.

Her petition for bail was presented by Attorney-at-law, Mr. Lyndon Amsterdam.
Among other things, the petitioner is saying through her lawyer that the charges against her are not likely to succeed and produced facts to indicate this.
She is a housewife and her common-law spouse, Roopesh Singh, is a fisherman.
According to her, on August 26, 2010, a party of policemen came to her home and requested to carry out a search for drugs. She allowed them to search her home and they found no drugs.
Then shortly afterwards, a police officer went to the back of her house and to the government reserve and returned  with a bottle which he claimed contained narcotics and insisted that it belonged to her.
She was arrested and taken to Leonora Police station and subsequently placed in the lockups at Den Amstel Police Station.
The next day she was taken to Vreed-en-Hoop Court, where  two charges were read against her –  possession of  20 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking,  and possession of  20 grams of cannabis sativa for trafficking.

Bail was granted in the sum of $300 000 for being in possession of cocaine and $150, 000, for being in possession of cannabis sativa .
