Mackenzie High School records better CSEC, CAPE results

– Meletia Hossannah and Suzanne Hamilton adjudged Top Performers
MELETIA Hossannah and Suzanne Hamilton were adjudged Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) performers, respectively, at Mackenzie High School (MHS), based on the 2010 results.
Hossannah secured passes in 10 subjects, including eight grade ones and, for the third consecutive year, Hamilton topped MHS candidates, following her best CSEC showing in 2008 and CAPE Year One performance in 2009.

Hamilton was the best Secondary Schools Entrance Examination (SSEE) candidate in Region Ten (Upper Demerara/Berbice) when she took the test in 2003 at Regma Primary School, Mackenzie.

Hamilton was named the top CAPE student this year, recording the best results in passing five subjects, with grade ones in Accounting and Economics, a grade two in Management of Business Unit Two and a grade four in Sociology.

However, Hossannah was ahead of Winnette Smartt, who gained passes in 11 subjects, with seven grade ones, to place second among those who sat the CSEC.

Hosssannah’s grade ones were in English, Integrated Science, Office Administration, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Social Studies and Physical Education, the grade twos in Mathematics and a grade three in Caribbean History.

Smartt did better than Keon Fleming, the lone male in the top ten CSEC candidates at MHS, who also passed in 11 subjects with seven grade ones.

Smartt scored grade ones in Agricultural Science, English A, Integrated Science, Principles of Business, Social Studies, Physical Education, Human and Social Biology, grade twos in Mathematics, Geography, Office Administration and Principles of Accounts and Fleming’s grade ones were in Biology, Chemistry, English A, Information Technology, Mathematics,
Electricity, Human and Social Biology, grade twos in English B, Geography and Physics and a grade three in Visual Arts.
ALLICOCK
Toshanna Allicock, with passes in 10 subjects, including seven grade ones was fourth; and fifth was Ornise Gordon, who got passes in 11 subjects with six grade ones. They were followed by Liza Johnson, who obtained passes in 10 subjects with six grade ones, like Phylicia Gomes, who recorded passes in nine subjects with six grade ones.
Jo-Ann Claxton passed in eight subjects with six grade ones and Ruth Inniss passed in 11 subjects with five grade ones, as did Savita Kum.
Delleana Anderson was second at the CAPE Level, having gained grade one in Communication Studies, grade twos in Environmental Science Unit two and a grade four in Biology Unit One.

Asake Lee was third, with three passes, a grade one in Caribbean Studies, a grade three in Communication Studies and a grade five in Law.
Makhaka Blakeney was awarded five passes, with grade twos in Accounting, Communication Studies and Caribbean Studies, a grade three in Economics and a grade five in Mathematics.
The next best CAPE student was Imoinda Fortune, who gained passes in three subjects, with grade twos in Biology Unit One, Communication Studies Unit One and Mathematics Unit One.
MHS Principal, Mrs. Cheryl McDonald declared she was happy with the achievements but is hoping that the school will do better next year.
She said MHS showed improvement at this year’s CSEC, having a 70.4 per cent passes in five or more subjects, inclusive of Mathematics and English B.
From a total of 905 candidates who wrote 24 subjects, the pass rate was 92.1 per cent of grades one to three, as compared to 89 per cent last year.
Among those who wrote English B, the percentage of students who passed with Grades 1 to III was 55 compared to 42 last year and 40 the previous year.
