SEPTEMBER would herald the month-long series of activities that constitute the Amerindian heritage month and this was one of the topics highlighted and discussed at the level of Cabinet last week.
Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon said Minister of Amerindian Affairs
Ms. Pauline Sukhai recently announced the date of commencement of activities and identified Waramuri in Region One, as the Amerindian ‘heritage village’ for 2010.
Luncheon said Government has provided $1M to the village for its Amerindian Heritage Day celebration on September 10.
There will also be simultaneous celebrations in Regions Seven, Eight and Nine, he told reporters during a post-Cabinet media briefing at the Office of the President on Thursday.
Luncheon said the launch of Amerindian Heritage Month will take place at the usual spot – the National Exhibition Complex, Sophia.
The activities for the month’s observances will begin with an Inter-faith church service at the Umana Yana on August 31 and will culminate with a Heritage dinner and prize giving ceremony at the Georgetown Club on Camp Street, Georgetown on September 29.
During Heritage month celebrations, a week of cultural exhibition and extravaganza is planned for the National Exhibition Complex, Sophia.
Dr. Luncheon said a ceremonial opening of the students’ dormitory will also take place at Liliendaal, during the month’s activities, in an effort to respond to the contributions that the first people have made in Guyana.
In addition, it will serve as recognition of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Government’s commitment to promote cultural diversity and recognise the realities of the Amerindian people, he told reporters.
