Youths will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of sports activities, while at the same time interact with youths of similar age groups, when the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport hosts its annual ‘Day of Interaction’ at Albion Sports Complex, Berbice on September 19, 2010.
‘Day of Interaction’ is an initiative the Youth Ministry undertook in order to encourage interaction and bring social cohesion among communities through a range of activities.
The initiative commenced four years ago at Enterprise on the East Coast of Demerara, and attracted participation from residents of Buxton, Annandale, Lusignan and other surrounding areas.
Persons will be participating in a number of games including football, volleyball, circle and table tennis, softball cricket, chess and dominoes, with the objective of building friendships and appreciation of each other.
The National Sports Commission will be providing the necessary sports gear and trophies.
In addition, discussion will be held on HIV/AIDS and information will be distributed to individuals as a means of raising awareness.
Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, in a recent interview with the Government Information Agency, stated that more than 1000 youths from 15 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils and three municipalities are expected to take part.
He noted that the event will encourage persons to get involved in sports and to be active, as well as raise awareness about the effects of unprotected sexual activities.
Government has been instrumental in promoting community development and building social cohesion throughout the country, among members of different ethnic groups and communities. (GINA)
