Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee yesterday met with representatives of the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miner’s Association (GGMA) and looked at fire equipment for Mahdia. The meeting took place at the Ministry’s boardroom, Brickdam, where Rohee said the meeting follows a letter he received from the group requesting a meeting to discuss the acquisition of fire fighting and prevention equipment for the town.
This was prompted by the July 1, 2010, fire at Mahdia which destroyed some 25 buildings and left more than 100 persons homeless.
President of the GGMA, Frederick McWilfred, yesterday told reporters that they are heartened at the prompt response from the Minister and their main contention is acquiring fire prevention equipment following the fire in Mahdia.
Alfred stated too that they have been working with some agencies to realize relief for the town and they have raised $10M. And they are awaiting permission from the Commissioner of Police to launch a wider appeal for funds.
Meanwhile, Fire Chief Gentle said he finds the meeting timely and useful, and the Guyana Fire Service is willing to assist in whatever was possible.
On July 1 last, millions of dollars went up in smoke at Mahdia, Region 8 (Potaro/Siparuni), and lives were threatened when several businesses and dwelling houses in the main shopping area, known as the Arcade, were razed to the ground by a fire of suspected electrical origin.
