Larceny defendants granted bail over Police objection

TWO 17-year-olds, Prince Pickering and Travis Lewis, were each put on $30,000 bail yesterday on a joint larceny from the person charge. Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson granted them pre-trial freedom over the objection by Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting.
It is alleged the duo, on July 22, in Stone Avenue Campbellville, Georgetown, stole a cell phone, valued $30,000, from Rehaz Andrew.
The defendants both pleaded not guilty and Pickering claimed he never met the other defendant before the day of the alleged offence but told the Court he asked the virtual complainant to borrow the instrument which he returned.
Lewis, too, denied knowing his co-defendant but said he saw the phone in the corridor of a bus as he was about to disembark and picked it up.
The Prosecutor said the defendants were about to exit the vehicle when Lewis snatched the instrument and they ran away but the booty was recovered from the possession of Lewis later.
Pickering and Lewis will face trial on September 15.
