ASSISTANT Superintendent (ASP) of Police Ivelaw Murray, shot and killed in tragic but mysterious circumstances, at Springlands, Corentyne, Berbice, 17 days ago, was buried yesterday at St. John’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Sparendaam.
His corpse was interred following a thanksgiving service at Glory Light Tabernacle in neighbouring Plaisance, also on East Coast Demerara. The deceased had served the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for 16 years, during two of which he had attained the ASP rank.
He was not accorded a military funeral like Constable Kevin Shepherd, who died in the alleged murder/suicide involving him but a few retired ranks, who worked alongside or under the father of the dead man, former Superintendent Ivan Daniels, were present.
Prior to the church service, scores of mourners and sympathisers, wearing red ribbons on their lapels, joined the family during the three hours of viewing at his home, where the songs ‘If I only had time’ and ‘Who can Explain’ were repeatedly played, at the request of family members, some of whom fainted occasionally.
Later, at the church, hundreds more turned out to bid farewell and pay their last respects to the young man who, unfortunately, died at age 33.
Among those paying tributes to him were his mother, Juanita Daniels, who sang ‘Let It Be’; his sister, Precious who tearfully managed two verses of ‘Redemption Song’.
Murray’s weeping wife, Keisha, unable to muster the courage to speak, clung to their baby, Juanita.
His maternal uncle, Peter France called on Police Commissioner Henry Greene to tell the nation just how Murray met his death and why he was not accorded a military send-off.
The GPF previously said, in a release, that Murray shot Shepherd, with whom he had a close relationship, before turning his service revolver on himself on July 4.
