After Monday meeting…
A TEAM, led by Chairman of the Private Sector Commission (PSC), Mr. Ramesh Dookhoo, met with Kuwaiti counterparts Monday and discussed the possibilities for information sharing in the areas of tourism, manufacturing, banking, construction, agriculture, mining and commerce. A PSC release, about the meeting in Princess Hotel, Providence, East Bank Demerara, said the visiting Kuwaitis were very satisfied with the information received and expressed their enthusiasm to invest in Guyana.
The release said the Kuwait delegation indicated that trade with that country would be very trouble free because there are no taxes on food and only a standard five per cent charge on other services.
Dookhoo handed over an information package on investing and doing business in this country and the two sides agreed to initiate their partnership by sharing business propositions/opportunities available locally on the website of the Chamber of Commerce of Kuwait, where it will be made accessible to 23,000 members of the latter organization, the release said.
In addition, he addressed Guyana’s tax laws, incentive regimes, land ownership policy, the macro-economy and the investment opportunities in various sectors.
The release stated: “Businesses interested in accessing information on joint ventures, strategic partnerships and other facts on Kuwait can contact Executive Director of the PSC, Mr. Roubinder Rambarran.”
Chairman of Kuwait Travel and Tourism Agencies Association, Mr. Khalid Moh’d Al Hamad, Mr. Nasser B. Al-Sharan of the Kuwait Industries Union, as well as Mr. Asaad A. Albanwan, President of the Kuwait Union of Investment Companies were in attendance.
The local representatives included Rambarran; PSC Vice-Chairman, Mr. Yog Mahadeo; President of Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GM&SA) and PSC Trade and Investment Chairman, Mr. Clinton Williams; Vice-President of Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA), Mr. Charles Da Silva; President of Guyana Association of Bankers (GAB), Mr. John Tracey; Senior Vice-President of Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Mr. Eon Ceasar and President of Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), Mr. Paul Stephenson.
Stephenson described Guyana’s tourism product to the visitors and presented them with a special package of pertinent information on the Tourism Sector and the release said the PSC indicated that the Kuwaitis were particularly interested in the way this country coped with the global economic crisis.
The release said they were presented with the facts surrounding the comparatively minimal impacts on Guyana, by Tracey, who is also Chairman of the PSC.
“The Guyanese delegation made it clear that our currency is stable and that it appreciated, in a small way, against the U.S. dollar, which is our intervention currency. Our successes in ICT (Information Communication Technology), manufacturing, construction and agriculture were also discussed,” the statement said.
It added that the need for more airlines coming to Guyana and improvements in the shipping and transportation sectors were addressed, too.
