THE Labour Ministry says it is helping more people find jobs through its current series of job fairs around the country.
At these fairs staff from the ministry’s Central Recruitment and Manpower Agency (CRMA) register the names of those interested in finding jobs and employers looking for quality employees.
Ms. Valerie Moore of the CRMA told the Government Information Agency (GINA) the job placement success rate has seen marked improvement.
The latest job fair was held at Rosignol in Region Five Saturday to better promote the services of the ministry in that area.
Booths were set up along the Rosignol market road and officials also offered HIV/AIDS testing and counselling and blood pressure testing.
GINA said visitors were able to register with the CRMA of the Labour Ministry for job placements.
The agency said Moore urged employers to register with the ministry whenever they have openings as the registrants for jobs far outnumber the vacancies.
Ms. Genevieve Blackman, HIV/AIDS Coordinator, in the ministry, said five fairs of this nature have so far been held in Regions Two, Six, Seven, Eight and Nine over the course of a year.
Regions One, Three and Ten will be covered before the end of the year, she told GINA.
She noted that the issue of HIV/AIDS in the workplace has become critical, especially recently with all the emphasis being placed on it.
A responsibility of the ministry, Blackman said, is to help organisations and agencies create HIV/AIDS programmes and policies consistent with international standards.
Labour officers were also on hand at the Rosignol fair to help deal with questions related to labour issues and workers’ safety on the job.
Labour Officer, Mr. Sarfraz Azeez, said it is important for workers to be aware of their rights in the employment process as this can help reduce unlawful job termination.
First aid workers from the Guyana Red Cross assisted in blood pressure testing and counselling.
