Van Lange leads field, qualifies for six events
BRITANY Van Lange emerged as the cream of the crop of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association’s Goodwill Games hopefuls as she managed to qualify for six events at the Goodwill Games trials which were held over the weekend at the Castellani Pool, Homestretch Avenue.
Her performance over the three days of competition was highlighted when she beat the A level qualifying time of 1 minute :20.62 seconds in the 100m Butterfly event of the 13-14 years category which she finished in 1 minute :19.97 seconds.
Van Lange also won that discipline over the 50m distance and clocked 34.72secs to beat the B level qualifying time of 36.21 seconds.
She also qualified in the 100m Freestyle by clocking 1 minute :06.20 seconds to best the B level Goodwill Games qualifying time of 1 minute :06.64 seconds and went on to win the Freestyle over 50m in 30.57 seconds which falls under the B level qualifying time of 31.73 seconds.
Van Lange once again bested the clocks in the 50m Breaststroke and the 50m Backstroke as she finished the Breaststroke in 41.98 seconds which was faster than the B level qualifying time of 42.32 seconds. In the Backstroke she was timed in at 35.44 seconds which fell under the B level qualifying time of 36.99 seconds.
Ronaldo Rodrigues and Serrano Gonsalves were also good performers in the water over the weekend as they both managed to make qualifying times in four events – each of the boys 13-14 years age category.
Rodrigues beat the B level qualification requirement of 35.88 seconds with his final time of 34.67 seconds in the 50m Breaststroke and also qualified in the discipline over 100m by beating the B level qualifying time of 1 minute :17.50 seconds with his time of 1 minute :16.81 seconds.
He also qualified in the Butterfly over 100m and 50m as his time of 1 minute :09.08 seconds surpassed the A level qualifying time of 1:09.35 seconds in the 100m race and his time of 29.84 seconds beat the B level qualifying time of 31.05 seconds in the 50m segment of the event.
Gonsalves also qualified in the Butterfly over both distances as he beat the B level qualifying time of 31.05 seconds with his time of 30.43 seconds in the 50m as well as the B level qualifying time of 1:11.43 seconds in the 100m with his time of 1:10.93 seconds.
The other races that he qualified in were the 50m Backstroke in which he overcame the A level qualifying time of 31.44 seconds with his time of 31.38 seconds and the 100m breaststroke in which he beat the qualifying time of 1:10.50 seconds with his time of 1:10.20 seconds.
Soroya Simmons qualified in the 100m Breaststroke and the 50m backstroke in the Girls’ 13-14 years age category; in the Breaststroke she qualified with her B level qualifying time of 1:19.48 seconds and in the Backstroke her time of 35.09 seconds was sufficient for A level qualification.
Steffi DeNobrega qualified in the 50m breaststroke of the Girls’ 15-17 age category with her B level qualifying time of 42.00 seconds while Kevon DeMoura qualified in the same event in the Boys’ category with his B level time of 33.63 seconds and Shaqueel Amin qualified in the 50m freestyle of Boys’ the 11-12 years category with his B level qualifying time of 29.84 seconds.
