PRIME Minister and acting President Samuel Hinds has said that the prevailing economic crisis in the world is taking its toll on workers, noting that while it seems that “we are out of it, there are questions as to whether or not a second dip is not on the way.”
Mr. Hinds made this observation while addressing the 3rd Delegates Congress of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) at the Umana Yana on Tuesday.
He opined that there seems to have been a shift in the old basis of growth, development and economic activities, noting that demand for material goods will keep rising.
“When we think of climate change and the limits to what our environment could supply and receive, there are no limits to growth, development and consumption,” the Prime Minister said.
He said that Guyana has also to grapple with issues related to the regional grouping and questioned how people would feel when workers from sister CARICOM countries come to work in another regional territory.
The Prime Minister noted that when a country is fighting for independence, certain positions adopted by those in that struggle may not be compatible after independence is achieved, comparing the situation much like an adolescent wanting to be independent and staying out late, but having another perspective when he or she reaches adulthood.
He said that the new generation of a newly independent nation must start “with a clean slate” to build that nation.
