GROS ISLET, St Lucia (CMC) – Barbados broke a stubborn last-wicket stand to snatch first innings points over Leeward Islands on a rain-wrecked final day in the second round of the TCL West Indies Under-19 Challenge yesterday. On a day when only 46 minutes were available because of bad weather, Barbados managed to bowl the Leewards out for 211, after they resumed at 186 for nine at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.
With a minimum of 12 overs plus the mandatory 15 available following a 16:15 h start, the Leewards made a fight of it with the last-wicket pair of Leslie Lake (eight not out) and Shaquille Martini pushing their partnership up to 35.
They were beginning to cause Barbados some concern when left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican trapped Martina lbw for 16 as the batsman pushed forward tentatively in the third of the 15 mandatory overs.
Barbados finished with six points for their effort while Leewards claimed three points.
The first two sessions were ruined after heavy early morning rain left the outfield under water.
