President leads delegation to CARICOM meeting

President Bharrat Jagdeo will lead Guyana’s delegation to the CARICOM Heads of Government meeting to begin in Jamaica on Sunday. Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon said yesterday that the  delegation will include Minister of Foreign Affairs Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Presidential Advisor on Empowerment Odinga Lumumba, and Director-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Elizabeth Harper.
The HPS said that this year, the conference will include newly elected Heads of Government among the old ones, meeting under the chairmanship of Prime Minister of Jamaica Bruce Golding, and will be taking on an extensive agenda.
Luncheon said that Guyana will be interested in furthering regional integration, trading in goods and services, financing, agriculture and environmental services. The HPS said that the “big issues” will be the continued instability and recovery of the financial sector, international engagements on crime and security, and disaster preparedness, in light of the devastating earthquake in Haiti in January.
