High Court clerk charged with divorce document forgery

A CLERK attached to the High Court yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on a forgery charge.
It is alleged that Dwayne Gentle, 27, of Lot 239 Forshaw Street, Queenstown, between May 1 and June 6, 2010, forged a document to divorce Paul and Joanne Mitchell.

After Gentle pleaded not guilty, Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, objected to bail for him, on the ground that investigations are ongoing.
The Prosecutor said the defendant received $60,000 from Paul Mitchell.
Defence Counsel Patrice Henry submitted that there is no evidence against Gentle because no tests were done to verify his signature.
The lawyer argued that anyone could have signed the document to frame Gentle as a petition for the divorce had already been filed.
The magistrate, however, overruled the Police objection and granted Gentle $150,000 bail until July 30.
