Accused duck thief previously convicted of similar offence

Court told…
ACCUSED duck thief Michael Squires (no address given) was granted $10,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice, on Tuesday.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to simple larceny and the case was postponed to July 5.

Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, said, on May 21, Heeralall Saisnarine secured his domestic birds at Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice, but, later that evening, heard quacking sounds from the pen in his fenced yard.

The Prosecutor said, on looking through his window, the virtual complainant saw Squires leaving with a bag and subsequent checks revealed that one of the ducks was missing.

Dayaram informed the Court that Squires has previous convictions and was recently released from prison, having served a six month sentence for a similar offence.
