New Mabaruma Hospital providing crucial service…
Government’s vision to increase access to regional health care was advanced with the delivery of the first set of twins at the Mabaruma Regional Hospital last Wednesday. The twins, a boy and girl, were delivered by Dr Maya Layne, the new doctor assigned to Matthews Ridge but who is now at Mabaruma Regional Hospital, Region One.
The babies were born to Joan La Cruz of Hosororo, North West District, and are said to be in perfect health. The newborns have an older sibling.
CEO of the Hospital, Seonand Mossai, in a recent interview with the Government Information Agency, said the hospital is fully equipped with surgical theatre, laboratory, baby incubator and other necessities, with a staff complement of 62, including two medex and a resident doctor.
Mossai disclosed that a full-time pharmacist and two additional doctors (a gynaecologist and physician) are expected to join the team by September.
Since its rehabilitation recently, the hospital has been providing a range of services, including maternal child health, tuberculosis and malaria clinics.
It has all the equipment to perform major surgeries, but is awaiting the deployment of expertise.
Mossai said there has been an influx of patients since the facility is the only one of its kind in the region.
Two nurses hostel are being constructed at Mabaruma and Port Kaituma at a cost of $15M.
Government is spending over $237M to provide better health care services to residents of the region.(GINA)
