Ex-CGX employee accused of making fraudulent NIS claims

AN ex-employee of CGX Energy Inc., Surajdevi Chung, 36, of Lot 13 Hendbury Avenue, Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday on several charges of forgery and obtaining money under false pretence. She pleaded not guilty to seven counts of each offence.
Particulars of the charges said:

* between June and December 2007 and between February and September 2008, with intent to defraud, she forged seven pharmacy bills, purporting to show that they were issued by Medi Care, knowing that to be false and

* between January and November 2008, with intent to defraud, she obtained a total of $466,375 from the National Insurance Scheme (NIS)  upon or by virtue of seven forged Medi Care bills.

Defence Counsel Ronald Burch-Smith requested reasonable bail for the defendant but said he would stay away from the facts of the case for now and leave them for the trial.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said, while she was employed by CGX and was a contributor to NIS, Chung purchased medication from Medi Care Pharmacy and submitted several medical claims to NIS.
He said it was revealed that she only paid $29,050 for the merchandise but claimed $466,375 from NIS.
The Prosecutor said it is clear that the defendant intended to defraud NIS by changing the figures on the bills she got from the pharmacy.
He had no objection to bail but requested it be substantial and that the defendant be made to report at Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters regularly.
Chung was ordered to post $500,000 surety and report at CID Headquarters until the determination of the case, which will be called, again, on July 30.
