$9M contract for excavation of Supenaam Creek canals

THE Government of Guyana, on Thursday, signed a $9M contract with Essequibo contractor, Mr. Kaydar Persaud, for excavation of several canals along the right bank of Supenaam Creek. The signing took place in Supenaam Creek Nursery School, on Essequibo Coast and Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud, who was present, said the project, to be executed in two phases, is aimed at increasing agricultural production that area.
He said the focus will be on farmers who are currently farming there and they will be assisted to expand cultivation for greater production and improvement of their livelihood.
Mr. Persaud assured the farmers listening to him that the Government is committed to giving them every support for developing agriculture in their community.
He charged them to monitor the project and help maintains the waterways after the excavation exercise is completed.
Residents in attendance took the opportunity to raise several other matters concerning development in their community.
Chairman of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Alli Baksh, who accompanied Persaud, challenged the farmers to work, collectively, as a group, to purchase mobile pumps for draining their farms during overtopping at high tides.
With them, too, were General Manager of New Guyana Marketing Corporation (NGMC), Mr. Nizam Hassan; Head of the National Agriculture Research Institute (NARI), Dr. Udho Homenauth; Parliamentarian, Mr. Farouk Khan and officers of the Agriculture and Forestry departments.
