With 250 unlawful dumpsites…
THE City Constabulary has identified 250 unlawful dumpsites across Georgetown, Public Relations Officer Royston King disclosed yesterday.
He told the Guyana Chronicle the municipality is worried over the practice of littering in the capital, particularly in the Bourda and Lacytown wards.
Mr. King said the Council has stepped up its campaign to help curb the habit and a special unit has been established to carry out surveillance at the illegal establishments.
He maintained that disposing waste at such places is not good for the reputation and image of the Council and constables from the Constabulary are visiting the locations.
According to him, about 50 persons have been prosecuted in the Courts and many have been fined the maximum $10,000.
King said prosecution will continue but the cooperation of citizens is needed, in the utilisation of litter receptacles placed at strategic points.
He admonished citizens to desist from throwing garbage in alleyways and help fight the problem, noting that garbage trucks are usually on time and citizens have no excuse to litter.
