GBTI Open Tennis tourney …

Sukra, Adams and Niamatalli record wins on first day
KRYSTAL Sukra, veteran player Carlos Adams and Mario Niamatalli are among the notable mentions in the pool of winners of the first two days of competition in the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry and Guyana Lawn Tennis Association’s (GLTA) Open Tennis tournament.

The opening match saw Carlos Adams utilising his experience to easily prevail over junior Saevion David Longe. The encounter ended after just two sets with the score reading 6-2, 6-3.
Sukra’s match against GLTA executive member Grace McCalman was an exciting one as the pair put on a good show for the crowd. Sukra hit a high percentage of winners and eventually prevailed 6-2 in the first set over McCalman who battled hard and played some excellent points.
The match was, however, cut short with Sukra leading 2-0 as McCalman had to retire due to an injury which curtailed what was building up to be quite a match.
The match between Mario Niamatalli and Henk Wilkinson was a fight to the finish, a marathon match which lasted three sets. Niamatalli’s well deserved 3-set victory was documented on the scorecard as 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
Gairy Myers and Godfrey Lowden were also among the winners in Friday’s opening round as they overcame Jermaine Abel and Curtis George respectively.
Myers overpowered Abel in two sets by restricting him. He prevented him from hitting any winners on both occasions and the match was scored at 6-0, 6-0. Lowden’s victory was also somewhat commanding as he also managed a two-set victory with the scores reading 6-0, 6-2.
Top seeds Gavin Lewis and Daniel Lopes recorded easy victories in the Junior Boys’ Singles category yesterday as number one seeded Lewis put down the threat from Johnathan Fagundes in two sets with the scores reading 6-1 in both sets. Lopes, who is seeded number two defeated Neion Barry 6-0, 6-0.
Saevion David Longe redeemed himself after his loss on the first day by overcoming Judah Stephney in a commanding two-set victory in which he scored 6-0 in both sets. Khalif Gobin defeated Benedict Sukhra 6-3, 6-2 while Dominic Fraser defeated Mindat Lallbeharry 6-0, 6-1 in a separate encounter and Stanley Ming defeated Nicolas Stephney 6-4, 7-5 in a keenly contested match.
The only Girls’ Singles encounter was contested between Nicola Ramdhyan and Aneesa Grandison with the former walking away victorious after the two-setter ended 6-0, 6-1 in her favour.
