Bryan instrumental in two doubles title wins

THE common contributor in the title-winning combinations that walked away from yesterday’s finals in the Junior Mixed Doubles and Junior Boys’ Doubles categories of the National Sports Commission-sponsored Guyana Table Tennis Association Independence Table Tennis tournament was none other than the 18 years and under champion Nigel Bryan.
Bryan combined forces with Chelsea Edghill, another powerhouse, who has so far won the 13 years and under, 15 years and under and 18 years and under titles, to overcome Adeille Rosheuvel and Denzel Hopkinson and claim the mixed doubles title. Bryan and Edghill dominantly won that encounter in three sets without giving up any of those sets to their opponents. The duo’s performanance was reflected on the scorecard 11-4, 11-8, 11-8.
In the boys’ doubles category Bryan was paired with Zane Humphrey to take on Samuel Fraser and Sunil Logan. That match also ended in three sets which were all won by Bryan and his comrade who clinched the title 11-6, 11-8, 14-12.
Akeicia Nedd and Sachin Panday were the third place winners in the mixed doubles category as they managed to fend off the attack of Olivia Weekes and Samuel Fraser. Nedd, who is this year’s runner-up in the 15 years and under category and Panday won the three-setter with the scores reading 11-6, 11-3, 11-7 at the end of the encounter.
Panday was also on the team that claimed third place in the boys’ doubles category along with Denzil Hopkinson. The pair silenced the threat from Kyle Edghill and Stefan Corlette in the four-set match which ended with the scorecard reading 11-9, 11-5, 7-11, 11-4.
Lisa Lewis and Trenace Lowe advanced to the final round of the women’s doubles category after defeating Adeille Rosheuvel and Akeicia Nedd 11-9, 11-6, 10-12, 11-4 and tomorrow they will take on Chelsea Edghill and Natalie Cummings who defeated Andelina Rampersaud and Olivia Weekes 11-5, 11-7, 11-7, in the finals.
The finals of the men’s doubles category will see Joel Allen and Hewley Griffith, who defeated Mark Edwards and Patrick Triumph 9-11, 11-9, 11-4, 12-10, come up against Nigel Bryan and Warren Hackshaw who defeated Dwayne Gibson and Ebinho Lewis 11-8, 11-9, 11-8, in the semi-finals.
