Patentia Secondary students picket Police Station, Education Ministry

More than 100 students of Patentia Secondary School, accompanied by their parents, and relatives of the schoolboy Kelvin Fraser who was shot and killed by the police on Monday afternoon, Thursday staged a protest in front of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Brickdam Police Station, and the Ministry of Education, all on Brickdam. The noisy group was supported by leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R), Robert Corbin and freed treason accused, Mark Benschop.
Several minibuses with schoolchildren were observed as part of the protest, which grew noisy when the driver of a canter truck, who is part of the protest, was arrested and his vehicle lodged at Brickdam Police Station.
Shortly after Mr. Corbin went into the police station to talk to the police, and the truck and the driver were released.
A group of schoolchildren told the Guyana Chronicle that the killing of their classmate has left them in a very traumatic state and they are protesting to show their support, and hoped that justice be served.
A post mortem is expected to be performed on the body of the schoolboy today.
Police, in a press release late Monday night, said they are investigating the fatal shooting of Fraser, 16, by a rank who was, at the time, responding to a report of a group of men molesting female students at Patentia Secondary School.
The release said initial investigations indicated that the Headmistress had made a report to a member of the Community Policing Group who, in turn, informed the Police at Wales Station, resulting in a prompt response.
The release said, on arrival at the school, six youths were pointed out as the perpetrators and, on seeing the Police, four of them ran away while two were arrested.
The Police said ranks pursued the four and caught up with Kelvin at Third Street, Patentia Housing Scheme, where, during efforts to arrest him, a scuffle ensued between himself and a rank who was armed with a service shotgun that went off, hitting him in the chest.
The wounded lad was taken to West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
