Exhibition marks first time NCERD Independence Anniversary observance

THE National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD) in observance of Guyana’s 44th Anniversary, hosted an Independence Exhibition at its Kingston, Georgetown Library on Tuesday. The Librarian and Coordinator of the event, Ms. Joan Broomes said it was the first time that the institution commemorated the milestone and the aim was to highlight pre and post independence activities.
The material on display included ‘A Glance at Britain’, which portrayed the struggle by the leaders towards independence and the last night of colonialism.
There was also a presentation on Guyanese Literature, books of poetry by Martin Carter and A. J. Seymour, as well as other local writers, local art and craft products, information on the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) and an educational documentary entitled ‘Guyana, Yours to Discover’.
Broomes expressed appreciation for donations from the Allied Arts Department of the Education Ministry and Carnegie School of Home Economics.

She said: “I’m impressed with the response and the comments made by persons who viewed the exhibition. I’m also pleased with the response from the education Sector.”
This was the last week for viewing the exhibits as the show ended yesterday.
The Library is also conducting a literacy programme, for which a ‘Juvenile Room’ was arranged so that children can learn phonics and participate in the ‘Story Book Safari’, an interactive reading exercise.
Broomes said it would encourage the participants to read as education and literacy go hand in hand. (CHEVON SINGH)
