DR. PETER PIOT, NEW HEAD OF LONDON SCHOOL OF HYGIENE & TROPICAL MEDICINE

…  IAS sends congratulatory message
1 June 2010 (Geneva, Switzerland) – The International AIDS Society (IAS) congratulates former IAS president Professor Peter Piot on his appointment as Director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a research-led postgraduate centre of excellence in public health, international health and tropical medicine.

“The IAS is delighted with this week’s announcement,” said Julio Montaner, President of the International AIDS Society. “We congratulate Professor Piot on a great personal achievement, he will no doubt bring unique vision and experience to this new position. His appointment also highlights the important role that leaders in AIDS play in the broader field of global public health. Piot is both a fine example of an expert in public health whose work has made a huge impact on the response to AIDS, and of how lessons learned from HIV and AIDS can be translated into improving broader health systems.”

“Professor Piot’s appointment as Head of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine at this crucial moment in the global response to AIDS provides real encouragement for all HIV professionals,” said IAS Executive Director Robin Gorna. “As he takes on the role of Director at a leading institution addressing the continuing scientific and public health challenges, Piot’s experience in AIDS should prove significant in keeping HIV as a global public health priority.”

Professor Piot served as President of IAS from 1992 – 1994. He is the current Director of the Institute for Global Health and Professor of Global Health at Imperial College London.

The International AIDS Society (IAS) is the world’s leading independent association of HIV professionals, with 14,000 members from 190 countries working at all levels of the global response to AIDS. Its members include researchers from all disciplines, clinicians, public health and community practitioners on the frontlines of the epidemic, as well as policy and programme planners. The IAS is the custodian of the biennial International AIDS Conference, which will be held in Vienna, Austria from 18 to 23 July 2010.
