…compliments of President Jagdeo
Olga Jacobs, the oldest resident of St. Cuthbert’s Mission, Region Four, was yesterday presented with a hamper that was promised to her by President Bharrat Jagdeo during a recent visit to the community. Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai, conducted a visit to the Mission where she delivered the hamper to Aunt Olga, as she is commonly known among the residents. Minister Sukhai said it was a pleasure to make the presentation on the President’s behalf.
President Jagdeo was on a Cabinet outreach on May 20 when he visited the community and met with residents to discuss issues and listen to their concerns.
During the visit, the elderly woman got the attention of the President who listened intently to her as she spoke. She presented him with a hand-made mosquito brush which she skillfully crafted.
The elderly resident expressed gratitude to President Jagdeo for the gift which costs approximately $40,000, and consists mainly of food items and other necessities.
Jacobs said that she is also grateful to the Government for providing her with a monthly old age pension which helps to upkeep her.
Maudline Jacobs, one of the woman’s daughters, also expressed appreciation for the President’s kind gesture.
Aunt Olga who is 90 years old has lived in St. Cuthbert’s Mission all her life.
Despite her age, the mother of 10 continues to plant her kitchen garden and still moves around the village on her own.
