THE Georgetown Seawall Bandstand is now the target of the social rejects, including some commonly called ‘junkies’, who have been stripping it of materials to sell scrap metal dealers. The Guyana Chronicle, on a visit there yesterday, observed that vandals have removed some of the iron bars and two persons were fast asleep inside.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds has suspended the sale of scrap iron and said he was forced to do so to curb vandalism that continued unabated on private and State property containing metal.
Georgetown Seawall is a favourite for afternoon walks, musical concerts in the bandstand, as well as sporting activities and lovers’ trysts.
The bandstand was erected in 1903 with funds subscribed by the public as a memorial to Queen Victoria, with the Koh-i-noor Shelter North of it. (Cullen Bess-Nelson photos)
